SOFTWARE DEVELOPER

About

Lucy

Hi! My name is Lucy and I am a Software Engineer based in London seeking new opportunities.

My positive attitude, dedication and time management have enabled me to grow in every aspect of my working life. Previously, I worked for a startup, in a fast-paced environment, which allowed me to adapt quickly under pressure in different situations. The influence of technology on our modern world has always fascinated me and I enjoy solving problems creatively. As a result, I wanted to seek a new challenge and develop new skills. This led me to do an immersive Software Engineering Course at General Assembly, whereby I developed skills in Javascript, React, Express, Node.JS and Python.

I am now looking to progress my career in the tech industry, whereby I can further my skills, challenge myself and thrive as a junior web developer.

Interests

Cooking

In my spare time, I love cooking. After completing an Advanced Cookery course at The Avenue Cookery School, my passion for food emerged.

Travelling

Travelling and Volunteering are other big interests of mine. I have been lucky to volunteer at a school in Thailand, an orphanage in India and at a Childcare centre in Jamaica.

What is something interesting that people should know about?

In April 2020, almost 4.57 billion people were active internet users.

This encompasses 59 percent of the global population, showing us that a world without the internet is unimaginable and the impact technology has on our society is still growing. It's phenomenal that over half of our global population require not only technological devices but also the internet to live their daily lives. Therefore it is important we can not only cater for these users, but that we can constantly evolve to engage our users.

Experience

Software Engineering Immersive | January 2019 - April 2019

My time at General Assembly has taught me the key skills needed to be a Junior Developer. Aside from learning popular programming languages (HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, Node.js and Python 3), I was also educated on working collaboratively with others through group labs and projects, using documentation to familiarise myself with new frameworks and libraries, the use of version control with git and GitHub, as well as other industry essentials such as daily standup, best practices in writing code and problem solving. I couldn’t recommend this bootcamp more and I am now looking to progress my career in the tech industry, whereby I can further my skills, challenge myself and thrive as a junior software developer.

Head of Events | February 2019 - October 2019
Sales & Marketing Manager | February 2017 - February 2019

My role at POPS started off as a Sales & Marketing Manager which evolved after 2 years, whereby next I became Head of Events, which was more of a client-facing role. Being in a small team of 4, allowed me to adapt quickly under pressure in different situations. My responsibilities in this role included communicating with current clients, reaching out to new business and ensuring our internal CRM system (Salesforce) and website were managed and updated efficiently. My positive attitude and dedication at POPS provided me with an excellent opportunity to practice my communication, teamwork, organisation and time management skills, all of which I found improved dramatically throughout my time there.

Projects

The Software Engineering Immersive Course, at General Assembly, involved carrying out both individual and group projects, learning along the way valuable skills for the workplace.

Frogger

HTML | CSS | JavaScript (ES6)

Individual challenge, within 1 week. I created a front-end interactive Frogger style game using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. The game included keyboard movement and a scoring system, stored in local storage.

Movify

HTML | CSS | JavaScript (ES6) | Bulma | React.js| Webpack

Paired project, within 2 days. We created a React Application that consumed a public API, using JavaScript. Our app is a movie database, where the user can search for any movie and any top rated movie (using an external API). The app was styled with CSS.

Nutrifix

JavaScript (ES6) | React.js | Node.js | Express | Mongo and Mongoose | HTML | CSS | Bulma, SCSS | Webpack

Group project, within 10 days. We created a full-stack web app, whereby the user can search for a selection of recipes, add their own recipe and create a shopping list. We also used an external API, FoodDatabase, where the user can search the nutrition for any ingredient. Out app used a RESTful API, MongoDB, Express, Node.js and React. Styled using Bulma and CSS.

Fitbook

JavaScript (ES6) | React.js | Python | Django | PostgreSQL | HTML | CSS | Bulma | Webpack

Paired project, within 1 week to build a full-stack web app. This is a fully mobile responsive CRUD application which we built using Python and PostgreSQL. Fitbook is a fitness class booking system, whereby the user can search for a fitness class in their area and book within 24 hours. For the frontend we used React and JavaScript, styled using Bulma and CSS.
